Dixons Carphone admits data breach from July 2017

Massive data breach as hackers access payment data of 5,900,000 customers

Retailer Dixons Carphone said it has uncovered unauthorised access of data held by the company.

In addition, Dixons Carphone said 1.2 million personal data records were hacked.

Dixons Carphone (DSITF) said Wednesday that it had discovered an attempt to compromise card processing systems at its Currys PC World and Dixons Travel stores.

The retailer added that 5.8 million of the compromised cards are protected by chip and pin number combinations.

However, an additional 105,000 cards from outside the European Union - with no chip-and-pin protection - have been compromised as part of the breach.

Dixons Carphone, the firm which runs well-known tech outlets in the United Kingdom including Currys, PC World, and Carphone Warehouse admits that it suffered a data breach in July 2017.

Senators may block Trump’s ZTE deal whether he likes it or not
The Senate added the block to the National Defense Authorization Act, a must-pass piece of legislation. Meanwhile, there's no guarantee US lawmakers won't come back with further sanctions.

He said: "Today's breach of Dixons data will have far reaching consequences for some time". In the 2015 incident, hackers exposed the personal details of more than 3 million customers and some employees.

It is investigating the hacking attempt, which happened past year.

Dixons Carphone said that action had been taken to close off the access, and there was no evidence to suggest it was continuing. "The protection of our data has to be at the heart of our business, and we've fallen short here", CEO Alex Baldock said in a statement.

Because the data breach dates back to previous year it will be dealt with by the ICO under the powers of the Data Protection Act 1998 and not the European Union General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which went into effect on May 25.

It said it had called in cyber experts and added extra security to its systems following the breach, while also since calling in the police and relevant authorities.

Dixons says it doesn't believe that the attackers have anything like the amount of data required to use the cards fraudulently. "We've taken action to close off this unauthorised access and though we have now no evidence of fraud as a result of these incidents, we are taking this extremely seriously", the CEO said. Baldock added that Dixons Carphone has also "added extra security measures" to its systems.
