Daimler ordered to recall over 200,000 diesel cars

Germany discovers ?illegal? devices that may be in 1M Mercedes diesels - Autoblog

"In our integrated emission control systems, there are several hundred functions interlocked with each other, which can not be considered independently from each other", a Daimler spokesperson told The Drive.

Germany's Transport Ministry said on Monday that 774,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in Europe had been found to contain unauthorised software defeat devices and ordered Daimler to recall more than 200,000 cars in Germany.

"The government will order 238,000 Daimler vehicles to be immediately recalled Germany-wide because of unauthorised defeat devices", the ministry said in a statement.

Vehicles kept to legal emissions limits for harmful substances like nitrogen oxides (NOx) during lab tests, only to exceed them as much as 40 times in on-road driving.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Vito models with diesel engines and a sports utility variant of the sedan, known as the GLC, were the main cars found to be at fault, the ministry said.

The Stuttgart-based carmaker has said the US Department of Justice has inquired about the company's emission certification processes, and that German prosecutors in Stuttgart are investigating Daimler employees on suspicion of fraud and criminal advertising. We will file an objection against the decision issued by the KBA (German Federal Motor Transport Authority).

Diesels have been under heavy scrutiny since United States authorities caught Volkswagen using illegal engine control software that turned off diesel emission controls in everyday driving.

This latest development follows news a year ago that saw Daimler accused of selling over one million cars with excess emissions in Europe and the USA, following earlier reports in the German media.

This comes just three years after VW admitted having fitted "cheat" devices in millions of its cars.

It is believed to have affected around eight million vehicles sold to consumers across the globe.
