Added Sugar Consumption In Toddlers Is On The Rise In The US

Lead study author Kirsten Herrick, a nutritional epidemiologist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said, "This is the first time we have looked at added sugar consumption among children less than 2 years old..."

Now, according to the CDC, all these pediatric illnesses are triggered by a higher added sugar consumption than normal in toddlers across the USA and the experts recommend parent to avoid feeding their children with products that are known to contain added sugar, such as sweetened cereals, candies, sweet sodas, fruity yogurts, and so on.

To arrive at her findings, Herrick assessed data from more than 800 infants and toddlers, aged between six and 23 months old, who took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2011 and 2014. Seven teaspoons of added sugar, twice the amount in a cup of chocolate milk, was the average for toddlers between 19 and 23 months.

Excessive sugar consumption is one of the most known common origin of obesity, dental degradation.

Researchers found that many children under the age of 2 in the United States are eating more added sugar than the recommended amount for adults.

The study is expected to be presented at the American Society for Nutrition annual meeting during Nutrition 2018. "Our results show that added sugar consumption begins early in life and exceeds current recommendations".

French minister says farmers' blockade of refineries, depots illegal: RTL radio
French farmers are infuriated because they want biofuel producers to use local oilseed crops such as rapeseed. At least five sites will be blocked Sunday evening, with a total 13 sites blocked by 9 a.m.

The parents of the study participants were asked to note down everything their child ate in a 24-hour period. The Dietary Guidelines 2015-2020 reveals that sugar-sweetened beverages make up 39 percent of added sugars in an average American's diet. These added sugars raise the daily calorie intake of the child.

They found that 85 percent of the infants and toddlers consumed added sugar on a given day and that added sugar consumption rose with age.

Added sugars include brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, lactose, malt syrup, maltose, molasses, raw sugar, and sucrose, according to the CDC.

Dr. Herrick said the easiest method of reducing added sugars in one's own and one's children's diets is to choose foods that do not contain added sugars such as fruits and vegetables. But they do suggest adults avoid exceeding more than 12 teaspoons of added sugar each day, based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

But most Americans exceed those limits.
