Rare tensions between Assad's backers as Syria's war unwinds

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad denied that military ally Russian Federation was making decisions for him, but said it was natural for there to be differences of opinion between allies, in an interview published on Sunday.

A civil war erupted in Syria in 2011 after the regime responded heavy-handedly to unarmed popular protests calling for an end to 44-years of Assad family rule in the country and for the instatement of a democracy. He also reiterated his aim to take back "every inch" of Syria.

The Syrian president also pointed out that for the previous 20 years, many young Syrians had remained under the Western influence and often times knew about the United States more than they knew about their own country.

Alongside Russia, Iran-backed forces in Syria have helped Assad drive rebels from the country's biggest cities and reclaim swathes of the eastern deserts from Islamic State. "They have never changed this policy since the old way of colonialism that existed in the beginning of the 20th century and the 19th century and before, but today it's covered by, let's say, a new mask, or different masks".

"We were about to achieve reconciliation in the southern part of Syria only two weeks ago, but the West interfered and asked the terrorists not to follow this path in order to prolong the Syrian conflict", Assad said, Al Jazeera reported.

On the British and USA intervention in Syrian territory, the ruler said that it is illegal, while the Russian presence is legitimate as in the case of Iran, since both Moscow and Tehran were called by the Syrian government. "I think that this is understood and accepted by these leaders", he added, noting that the full departure of Iran and Iranian backed forces from Syria would be "a long process".

"Russia never coordinated with anyone against Syria, either politically or militarily, and that's (a) contradiction", he said.

In his interview, Assad denied Moscow had ever had prior knowledge of such strikes, despite close cooperation between Israel and Russian Federation. Iran and Hezbollah have been widely seen as instrumental to bolstering the success of Assad's forces throughout the war.

Assad lambasted the American and British interventions, saying they were "breaching the sovereignty of Syria".
