Canada parliament condemns US attack on Trudeau, country simmers

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to members of the media following a meeting during the Group of Seven Leaders Summit in La Malbaie Quebec Canada

After Trump had left the summit in Quebec he rounded on Justin Trudeau personally, suggesting the Canadian Prime Minister was "very dishonest and weak" and "acts hurt when called out".

Despite his conservative rivals snapping at his heels in polls, Trudeau has seen Canadian politicians from across the spectrum close ranks around him after Trump threatened to slap tariffs on the automobile sector, which would mark a dramatic escalation in the trade spat.

"Way over the top with Navarro".

The prime minister said although retaliation "is not something I relish doing", he would not hesitate to do so because "I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests".

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back", he said.

After the summit on Saturday, Mr Trump announced he was ordering officials not to endorse the G7 communiqué agreed hours earlier by the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan.

Trudeau had been saying the same thing for several weeks, but Trump apparently found it reprehensible to repeat the message on the eve of his historic summit with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

Man holds two people hostage in Paris
He said to be armed with a bomb and a fake handgun and had originally taken three people hostage but one managed to escape. The man reportedly asked to speak to the Iranian embassy to deliver a message to the French government, Reuters reports .

His anger appears to have been sparked by a news conference Mr Trudeau gave after the summit, in which he described as "insulting" the way the United States cited national security as a reason for the tariffs.

President Donald Trump's fight with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau not only threatens to unravel the US's relationship with one of its oldest worldwide partners - it could also significantly damage the U.S. economy.

Unbowed, Trump tweeted anew Monday morning from Singapore: "Fair Trade is now to be called Fool Trade if it is not Reciprocal". Merkel also said the European Union would "act" against the USA trade measures.

The president concluded his tweetstorm by saying, "Sorry, we can not let our friends, or enemies, take advantage of us on Trade anymore".

"Not fair to the PEOPLE of America!". She said: 'This was a hard summit, with at times some very candid discussions.

One particular source of his ire recently has been Canada's supply management system, which levels tariffs of up to 300 per cent on imported dairy products.

"A reasonable, balanced and firm assertion that Canada will not be bullied, and that we will retaliate if the US Administration does not end its attack on our steel exports".
