White House takes up fight against 'back-stabbing' Trudeau

The United States and Canada swung sharply toward a diplomatic and trade crisis on Sunday as top White House advisers lashed out at Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a day after U.S. President Trump called him "very dishonest and weak".

At his news conference, Trudeau said Canada would take retaliatory measures next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

The Trump administration imposed aluminum and steel tariffs on the other G-7 members - the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, France, Canada and Japan - ratcheting up tensions between the US and its allies in the run-up to the summit.

Ford, a populist campaigner who has praised U.S. President Donald Trump in the past, said he stands "shoulder to shoulder" with Canada's Liberal prime minister because jobs in his province are at stake.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro also ripped into Trudeau on Sunday, saying there's a "special place in hell" for a world leader that double crosses Trump.

"It is not something we relish doing, but it is something that we absolutely will because Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau said.

Trudeau and the other G7 leaders used their meeting to try to persuade Trump to abandon the tariffs, which affect all of America's G7 allies.

In a statement on Saturday, Trudeau spokesman Cameron Ahmad said the prime minister had said "nothing he hasn't said before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".

The director of the national economic council under the Trump administration, Larry Kudlow, said during a CNN interview that Justin Trudeau stabbed the U.S.in the with his comments during a press conference held after U.S. President Donald Trump left the summit. He also said that because of Trudeau's comments, he instructed US trade representatives to not sign the communique the G-7 leaders had agreed upon expressing the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade".

"We're not going to be able to do that work under the threat of tariffs".

Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

The Prime minister's spokesman tweeting that what Trudeau said wasn't anything he hadn't already said to Trump himself.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said: "In a matter of seconds, you can destroy trust with 280 Twitter characters".

The incident has led to accusations that Trudeau is buffing up his eyebrows with a couple of stick-on substitutes.

He said Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit.

Those ambitions are going to be controlled along with efforts to combat terrorism and extremism and those who spread this deadly ideology", Trump said.
