Socceroos have room for improvement despite lucky 2-1 win in Hungary

Bert van Marwijk takes a Socceroos training session

He will be the youngest player at the World Cup and although his goal was aided by a goalkeeping error, the highly regarded teenager made an impressive cameo in just his second Socceroos appearance.

He raced onto an Arzani through-ball, crossing into the legs of Hungary captain Tamas Kadar, who trickled home past calamity keeper Denes Dibusz.

Australia get their Group C campaign under way against France on June 16 in Kazan, before also playing against Denmark and Peru.

There was to be a late reprieve for the visitors as Tamas Kadar also scored an own goal in the 92nd minute to hand Australia a second victory ahead of their journey to Russian Federation.

This year's tournament will take place between June 14 and July 15 at 12 stadiums across 11 cities in Russian Federation.

The 19-year-old scored within a minute of coming into the fray at Budapest's Groupama Arena, striking from long-range past Dibusz.

Van Marwijk said that faced with such a short period of time with the Australian team before the tournament, he needed to have his own people in place to deliver his message, style of play and tactics as quickly as possible.

"I know these guys and they don't come for the money, they only come to perform".

Fielding the same XI that beat Czech Republic 4-0 a week earlier, coach Bert van Marwijk did not see a similar performance.

The Socceroos were low-intensity, unable to penetrate or get creative force Tom Rogic on the ball.

Van Marwijk was appointed on a short-term basis in January following the resignation of Ange Postecoglou, who guided the Socceroos to the World Cup via the inter-confederation play-offs.

"I think it's maybe a game we might not have always won in recent times and I think that shows how far we've come", Irvine told reporters.
