Trump aide says Trudeau ‘stabbed us in the back’

G7 summit Donald Trump lashes out at America's key allies

Kudlow, who was in Canada with President Trump for the G-7 meeting, told CNN on Sunday that the US had come to an agreement with the other highly-industrialized nations in the group on a joint communique until Trudeau's "sophomoric play".

The US president warned that retaliation against metal tariffs - 25% on imports of steel and 10% on aluminium from countries including the United Kingdom and the rest of the European Union - would be a mistake after previously calling the EU approach to business "brutal".

Trump missed Trudeau's introductory statement at the meeting and entered the room while council co-chair Isabelle Hudon, who is Canada's ambassador to France, was speaking.

"He really kind of stabbed us in the back, " Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union, " referring to Trudeau.

BuzzFeed reported that the moment captured global leaders pushing for multilateral trade, while Trump refused to budge on his protectionist stance. "You just don't behave that way".

"We spend two days working out a (joint) statement and commitments".

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May preferred tact to confrontation, even after Trump allies allegedly told The Telegraph newspaper that the U.S. president had grown tired of May's "school mistress tone" and attention to details.

"To be honest with you, Prime Minister Trudeau, I respect". And then Trudeau starts blasting him in a domestic news conference? I'm sorry. It is a betrayal. "That is a double-cross".

At the day 2 of the G7 summit in Quebec on Saturday, President Trump met with the leaders of France, Italy, Germany, the UK, Canada, and Japan.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Mr. Trudeau said.

White House Trade Adviser Peter Navarro had even harsher words for Trudeau.

Trudeau, at least initially, did not respond to the fire directly. In one picture, while the former U.S. president is seen engaging in talks with the experts, in the other picture he can be seen sharing a light moment with Angela Merkel with watching the European soccer match.

The summit came in the wake of Trump announcing steel and aluminum tariffs on US allies. He did not grant Canada an exemption from those tariffs, citing national security concerns.

Curry at the time said he wanted his team to forego the White House visit as a protest against Trump and to "inspire" change. On Tuesday, reporters asked Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James for his thoughts on the Trump/Eagles imbroglio.

The annual G7 summit appeared to have weathered tensions over Trump's threats of a trade war on Saturday - until the US president pulled out of a joint statement while citing "false statements" by Trudeau.

He insisted, like Trump himself has done many times, that Canada has enormous tariffs itself - especially on certain dairy and food products.

Kudlow and Navarro asserted that Trudeau's comments were particularly troubling given the timing.

Trump's looming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un heightens tension, and White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow accused Trudeau of betraying Trump with "polarizing" statements on trade policy that risked making the USA leader look weak on the eve of the historic North Korea summit.

"POTUS is not gonna let a Canadian prime minister push him around, " Kudlow said.

"I understand the president was upset", Feinstein told CNN.

Kudlow accused Trudeau of "pouring collateral damage on this whole Korean trip". He should take it back.

At issue now is whether the seven nations can conclude their meeting with a joint statement of priorities.

Kudlow doubled down on blaming Trudeau in an appearance on CBS' "Face the Nation" later Sunday morning when he said the prime minister "picked a fight" and left Trump no choice but to pull out of the group's communique. Trump said Friday he thinks the group will produce a joint statement.

"That's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference. That will not stand".

"The president will continue to say what he says", he said of Trump.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California Democrat, said it's one thing for Mr. Trump to get angry, but quite another to ditch the agreement. Member countries chose to expel Russian Federation in 2014 after it annexed Crimea from Ukraine.
