Ali Bashar, 20, was arrested by Kurdish authorities in northern Iraq at the request of German police, Interior Minister Horst Seehofer said.

The body of the girl, who had been missing since May 22, was found Wednesday buried on the outskirts of the western German city of Wiesbaden. Both were murdered by "underage" asylum seekers who turned out to be adults. He was appealing the rejection of his asylum application and police said he was suspected in a string of previous offenses in the same area.

Bashar was first linked with the case after a 13-year-old refugee told police in Wiesbaden on Sunday that the Iraqi man had raped and killed Feldman.

Previously the investigation had the version that the crime was committed by two people, but the suspect 35-year-old Turkish citizen was released after interrogation. Germany was outraged June 8, 2018 by the escape of the failed Iraqi asylum seeker suspected for the rape and murder of the teenage girl, which raised questions over failings in immigration and police services.

The Central Council of Jews in Germany issued a statement saying they heard the news of the violent crime against 14-Year-old Susanna from Mainz "with deep concern".

"I'm shocked and speechless", Rabbi Vernikovsky told the German-Jewish weekly Judische Allgemeine.

German police say that Ali B. had recently been living in a refugee shelter located outside the girl's hometown of Mainz.

Seehofer announced the news of the suspect's subsequent arrest during a hastily-convened press conference in the town of Quedlinburg.

Authorities are also facing scrutiny over how Mr Bashar was able to flee undetected to Iraq days after the schoolgirl went missing two weeks ago.

Kuhn said investigators believed the girl had been the victim of "a collective rape and murder".

'The government should beg for forgiveness from Susanna's parents, ' said the top-selling tabloid Bild. "The only thing that is worse than the murder of a child is the murder of a child by a criminal who should not have been in our country".

Seehofer thanked local authorities for their swift assistance in the investigation and said that the German foreign office and police had begun filing a request for the suspect's extradition "in accordance with global regulations".

"Preparations have been made to have the suspect transferred as quickly as possible to face trial in Germany".
