Julian Alaphilippe wins first mountain stage in Dauphine

Ireland's Dan Martin and Britain's Geraint Thomas were edged out in a dramatic sprint as Julian Alaphilippe claimed stage four victory at the Criterium du Dauphine. It's his first victory since signing to the UAE Team Emirates outfit.

After finishing the stage in ninth among a select chasing group, Team Sky's Gianni Moscon (Italy) took the race lead and leadfrogged teammate Michal Kwiatkowski (Poland), with Thomas is now in third.

Kwiatkowski lost 17 seconds but is still second overall, six seconds behind Moscon, with Thomas completing the Sky trifecta atop the GC on the same time as the Pole.

"I'll enjoy tomorrow, or I'll try to enjoy it in the jersey and defend it, but it's super hard", said Thomas, 32. The Dauphine is the main warm-up race for the July 7-29 Tour de France.

"It's a super hard climbing stage race, even harder on the weekend now".

England's Adam Yates, who's twin Simon wore the pink jersey at the Giro d'Italia for 13 stages in May, was third on the day at 15 seconds.

Thomas then launched a spectacular bid to catch Martin and only French hope Romain Bardet was able to follow.

"It's great in the new team environment". During the 130 kilometers, they'll face two climbs of the second category in the first 20 kilometers, to finish at the HC climb to Valmorel.
