Watch live as NASA launches new crew to International Space Station

The Soyuz rocket leaves its assembly hangar via rail

However, majority want the agency to stick close to home.

This launch comes on the heels of the safe return to Earth of Expedition 55, which was made up of NASA astronaut Scott Tingle, Japan's Norishige Kanai and mission commander Anton Shkaplerov of the Russian Space Agency.

The astronauts will be tasked with conducting various scientific experiments. However, 58 percent say they have no interest in taking this trip themselves, stating that the trip would either be "too expensive", "too scary", or that their age or health would not allow it.

The missions to Mars and the moon - which are some of the most high-profile missions of NASA - rank the lowest for Americans. The two parties tend to agree relatively about numerous priorities, though.

Only about 7 percent of Americans surveyed said they payed close attention to space news, hearing "a lot" about NASA and commercial space in the past year. Only 33 percent of American adults think private companies have the ability to ensure progress and explore the space, without National Aeronautics and Space Administration's help.

Although the media seems infatuated with private companies like Musk's SpaceX, Americans remain traditionally confident in NASA.

There are 16 countries involved in the International Space Station, with $ 100 billion to date, with Russian Federation having the largest contribution to this cost.
