Bison gores woman in Yellowstone National Park's third animal attack this week

In early May, 72-year-old Virginia Junk of Boise, Idaho, was rammed by a bison and pushed off a trail.

Kim Hancock, 59, of Santa Rosa, was in a crowd of people walking along a boardwalk at Fountain Paint Pot in the Lower Geyser Basin when the attack occurred, according to a statement from Yellowstone.

The bull bison "became agitated and charged the crowd before immediately leaving the area".

Park officials say some in the crowd came within 15 feet (4.6 meters) of the bison when the safe distance is at least 75 feet (23 meters). A paramedic ambulance transported her to the Big Sky Medical Center in Big Sky, Montana, in good condition.

On Sunday and on Tuesday, women near the Mammoth Hot Springs hotel were injured by a female elk. The woman tried to back away, but the elk pursued her and struck her in the head and torso. One person was injured by bison in 2017, and there were five incidents in 2015, according to the National Park Service.

Rangers recommend park visitors stay at least 25 yards away from animals, and at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves.

For the third time this week and fourth time in just over a month, a park visitor was attacked by wildlife.

'If you can't maintain these distances, turn around and find an alternate route'.
