MSU Interim President John Engler, Survivor Talk $500 Million Nassar Settlement

Michigan State University Agrees To Global Settlement Totaling $500 Million Dollars in Nassar Case

The July 18 show in Los Angeles honours the past year's best athletes and moments in sports.

The deal surpasses the more than $109 million that Penn State University paid to settle claims by at least 35 people that assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky had sexually abused boys, though the Nassar settlement involves far more victims.

Nassar was convicted in January and could face as many as 175 years in prison.

Attorneys representing 332 survivors of former Michigan State University doctor Larry Nassar in lawsuits against Michigan State University and attorneys for the university announced a global settlement in principle totaling $500 million dollars. Claims of sexual abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar were filed as early as 1997, but officials who knew of the abuse failed to properly report it.

"I remain deeply disappointed at the missed opportunity for meaningful reform at the University".

Unclear how MSU will pay Larry Nassar settlement

"When you pay out that much money you are saying, 'Yes, we were wrong. we were negligent and that is why this happened, ' " she said.

"I'm very grateful for the historic number that acknowledges some of the hardships that these women have suffered", said Rachael Denhollander, who was the first to publicly accuse Nassar. The abuse began when she was 15 years old, when she was a rising star on the United States national team, aiming for a spot at the Olympics.

Nichols was the first woman to alert USA Gymnastics to Nassar's abuse. In 2014, Amanda Thomashow prompted a Title IX investigation against MSU after she reported Nassar's abuse, but the probe ended after the school gaslit her, telling her that she did not understand a standard medical procedure from sexual assault. "But I think there's a lot more work to be done at MSU and institutions across the country".

MSU has an undisclosed amount of insurance coverage, as well as approximately $1.5 billion of unrestricted monthly liquidity as of June 30, 2017, which could be used toward legal fees, restitution and other unforeseen costs, according to Moody's.

The letter covered his thoughts on what MSU is doing to improve its handling of sexual assault and misconduct, what the settlement means for the MSU community and the survivors and how the university will carry out its "responsibilities required by the settlement". "After this settlement, I do believe in them". "They wouldn't just agree to the settlement, nor would the plaintiffs agree to that settlement, if the insurers weren't on board".
