Zuckerberg agrees to European parliament meeting

His concern and even frustration that the leadership of the EP agreed to hold a meeting behind closed doors, was expressed by a number of parliamentarians.

A spokesperson for Facebook told the Guardian newspaper that the company had accepted the "proposal to meet with leaders of the European parliament and appreciate [s] the opportunity for dialogue, to listen to their views and show the steps we are taking to better protect people's privacy".

In March, UK Conservative lawmaker Damian Collins demanded Zuckerberg provide evidence to the Commons committee pertaining to the Cambridge Analytica scandal, but the billionaire refused, opting to only front the US Congress.

While Zuckerberg will soon be in Brussels to answer some important questions over the social media platforms data policies and use, he remains unmoved with regards an invitation to attend a hearing with the UK's Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee.

That suggests he will avoid an uncomfortable public appearance and instead meet only with the legislature's top brass behind closed doors.

Věra Jourová, the European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, said on her Twitter profile that she is glad to see Mark Zuckerberg accept this invitation but that it is pity it will not be a public hearing since many Europeans deserve to know exactly how their data is being handled.

Guatemala opens new embassy in Jerusalem following US lead
Israel says it is defending its border and accuses Hamas of trying to carry out attacks under the cover of the protests. The violence earlier this week coincided with the dedication ceremony of the US Embassy in Jerusalem .

This meeting, according to the European parliament president, Antonio Tajani, could happen as soon as next week.

Zuckerberg's European Union visit will be his first since a whistleblower alleged that Cambridge Analytica improperly harvested information from over 50 million Facebook accounts to help Donald Trump win the 2016 presidential election.

Zuckerberg has so far declined to appear, to the British lawmakers' annoyance.

The news comes a month after the parliament invited Zuckerberg to appear before three of the assembly's committees.

There seems to be no end to the Cambridge Analytica controversy for Facebook. Collins warned Zuckerberg last month that if he does not come voluntarily, he could be issued a formal summons, which would force him to appear before the parliament when he next enters the United Kingdom.
