Watch NASA astronauts spacewalk to fix, upgrade space station

Source NBC News

This footage shows the astronauts on their spacewalk.

Over the course of the hours-long excursion, astronauts Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold, both veteran spacewalkers, will swap out a failed cooling component with a replacement on the station's port-side truss.

The boxes, each about the size of a mini-refrigerator or window AC unit, are crucial to keeping the batteries aboard the orbiting lab cool.

Ammonia coolant is toxic, and Mission Control repeatedly warned the spacewalkers to be careful of any leaks.

The PFCS is created to drive and control the flow of ammonia through the exterior portions of the station's cooling system.

"As a result the worry is that that pump got a bit cold and henceforth it was named 'Frosty, '" said Vareha. The other spewed out ammonia five years ago and is dubbed Leaky.

Frosty took Leaky's spot on a robot-arm mechanism, while Leaky was moved to a long-term storage platform. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., said that cutting off funding in 2025, as the White House wants to do, "would be irresponsible at best and probably disastrous".

The main danger of the spacewalk involves the high-grade ammonia that runs through the cooling loops. It is Fuestel's eighth spacewalk and Arnold's fourth. Overall, it's the 210th space walk For ISS assembly, maintenance and upgrades since the complex was first launched back in 1998.
