Mets put Yoenis Cespedes on DL, return uncertain

This Yoenis Cespedes injury has turned into a real Mets mess

Manager Mickey Callaway says NY hoped Cespedes could heal while playing, but the problem persisted.

The New York Mets finally relented and put their star, Yoenis Cespedes, on the 10-day disabled list on Wednesday morning due to a strained right hip flexor, the team announced. An MRI on Tuesday revealed the injury - picked up on May 6 - but the Mets chose to pull him from the lineup, stating he was available to pinch hit. "He was improving while he was playing, and that kind of stopped. So let's take a different route and make sure we're cautious with him and get him back to the Cespedes he can be sooner".

Manager Mickey Callaway said he would only use Cespedes as a pinch hitter on Tuesday if the game was on the line. It will be Cespedes' fourth DL stint for a leg injury in the past three seasons, despite an offseason focus on better caring for his lower half.

He will be eligible to return for the start of New York's series in Milwaukee on May 24.

Spanish Grand Prix: Five things we learned
Once again the Spanish Grand Prix provided the bulk of the action in the first lap, specifically in the first few corners. Sauber's Marcus Ericsson was excellent as he defended his ninth place from Renault's Carlos Sainz .

Cespedes leads the Mets with eight home runs and 28 RBIs, and is batting.255 this season.

"He could've continued to gut it out, continued to play", Callaway said. His preparation and the way he went about his business is definitely not the reason this happened.

The Mets have recalled infielder Phillip Evans and is in the lineup at left field for Wednesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.
