Ex-England player Wilson dies

Ray Wilson left-back of English World Cup winning squad in 1966 dies at 83

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2004 and died on Tuesday night.

Wilson's former club Huddersfield announced his death on Wednesday.

He spent most of his club career at Huddersfield Town before moving to Everton, where he was an FA Cup victor just months before his World Cup triumph.

Jimmy Greaves, who was also a member of England's 1966 World Cup squad, relayed fond memories of Wilson.

Wilson started out at Huddersfield in 1952, combining soccer with work on the railways.

"The thoughts of everyone at Town are with Ray's wife, his sons and the rest of his family and friends at this hard time".

Peter Shilton, who first came into the England team in 1970, two years after Wilson won his last cap, said on Sky Sports News: "Football was his life and that's all that concerned him really".

Wilson finished his career with spells at lower-league Oldham and then Bradford, where he was caretaker manager for a short stint after retirement.

The ex-Everton and Huddersfield full-back was the oldest member of Alf Ramsey's victorious side when he climbed the famous Wembley steps aged 31 to claim his World Cup winner's medal from the Queen on that famous day.

Wilson ended his football career in 1971 and subsequently worked as an undertaker for more than 25 years. One of our very few World Cup winners.
