Coli-Tainted Romaine Lettuce Likely No Longer on Store Shelves

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expanded its warning about an E. coli outbreak connected to romaine lettuce to cover all forms of romaine, including whole heads and hearts of romaine grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing area.

Romaine lettuce is displayed on a shelf at a supermarket in San Rafael on April 23, 2018.

Iowa, Nebraska and OR newly joined the list of 39 states that have reported illnesses linked to romaine lettuce.

Officials have warned against continuing consumption of Romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

That's "still within the window when contaminated romaine was available for sale", the CDC said, and "the latest reported illness started on May 2".

"It is unlikely that any romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region is still available in people's homes, stores, or restaurants due to its 21-day shelf life", the FDA said Wednesday, an update from previous advice to avoid romaine lettuce unless it's confirmed to be from outside this growing region.

It's finally safe to eat romaine lettuce again.

The CDC said 20 people had developed a severe outcome of E. coli infection called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

So far there has only been one death recorded, in California.

Lawsuits against chains including Red Lobster, Panera, and Papa Murphy's have been filed in response to a food-poisoning outbreak that has sickened at least 121 people in 25 U.S. states.

The CDC's Deputy Chief for Outbreak Response, Matthew Wise, said the technology helps authorities trace cases of E.Coli back to their source. Symptoms, which begin about three to four days after consuming the bacteria, can include watery or bloody diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, nausea and vomiting, according to the CDC.
