Sherpa sets new record for Mt Everest ascent

Kami Rita Sherpa poses for

Although Sherpa was scheduled to climb the world's tallest peak on Thursday, he achieved the feat a day before, surprising all his mountaineering colleagues and officials.

After previously completing his 21st ascent to the top of the 29,035-foot peak, Nepalese Sherpa Kami Rita reached Everest's summit for the 22nd time to set a new world record.

The 48-year-old Sherpa successfully reached the 8,848-metre high peak on Wednesday morning, breaking the previous record of 21 climbs jointly held by fellow Nepalis Appa Sherpa and Phurba Tashi Sherpa.

Another 180 climbers are preparing to summit Everest from its north side in Tibet, according to the China Tibet Mountaineering Association.

The route taken on the ascent was pioneered by New Zealand's Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay when they became the first climbers to reach the summit in 1953.

The rapid growth in the climbing industry has accompanied complaints of overcrowding on the mountain and fears that inexperienced mountaineers could run into trouble.

Before leaving the Everest base camp, Kami had announced that he intends to climb Everest 25 times. In the autumn, he guides clients to smaller peaks in Nepal.

Mingma Gelu Sherpa, Managing Director at Seven Summit Adventure told THT from the base camp that Lhakpa along with a team led by Alex Abramov made it to the summit at around 5:40 am.

The other two previous summit record-holders are also Sherpas. For the 44 year-old Lhakpa is the ninth time on the highest point of the earth, a female record that beats the record set by herself a year ago.

More than 340 foreign climbers along with their local guides are attempting to climb Everest this month.
