Revamped, AI-powered Google News app goes live on Android, iOS

Google News iOS

Last week at its annual I/O developer conference, Google unveiled its new AI-powered "Google News" application.

While the new app launched on Android a few days ago, it was added to the App Store for iOS on 15 May and is available in 127 countries around the world. This means that once you download the app and sign-in with your Google account, Google News will already be populated with stories and headlines it thinks you will care about.

This content is restricted to site members. The redesigned app also comes with a cleaner look than before. The updated app brings an all-new UI that's supposed to give you a faster, smarter briefing on the top news stories going on right now. The algorithm will also weigh things like local versus national news when deciding on what to display.

The company's idea behind the new app is to make the news search easier and at the same time provide an experience tailored to each reader. Most of all, it draws from a number of resources to provide packages of view, evaluation and fact-checked posts focused on particular newsworthy events, providing users a good platform from which to compose their minds regarding current affairs. Newsstand provides Just subscribe to a book and see its most recent articles in Google's mobile-optimized AMP standard. As for the first section, it is a "For You" section, where one can find top five stories that are trending at the moment based on the location of the user.

As part of that, another feature coming soon is "Subscribe with Google, which lets publications offer subscription-based content".

"Newsstand" aggregates media and will eventually offer thousands of magazine titles users can follow by subscribing to or selecting a start icon.

Google at the I/O event has specified that with this Google News app, a user can find quality content from a diverse set of credible publishers and can discover new genuine sources.
