The former England manager knew it was coming as talks were planned with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri today.

But this was not enough and the club have got rid of the former England manager.

Everton have sacked manager Sam Allardcye after six months in charge.

Everton finished the season in eighth position after lying 13th in the table when Allardyce took over but his tenure was characterised by huge criticism from fans.

"Again, we'd like to place on record our honest thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future".

A dismal start to the season under Ronald Koeman had Everton fearing being sucked into a relegation battle but stability and a push towards the Europa League spots did not placate the Everton support after Allardyce was given an 18-month contract.

Allardyce still had 12 months left on his Goodison but, with fans regularly voicing their discontent over the predictably squalid football being played, it's widely assumed that the club have been making arrangements in the background to bring Marco Silva in this summer. "Again, we'd like to place on record our honest thanks to Sam for his work with us over the last few months and wish him well for the future".

The statement released by the Vicarage Road side said: "The club is convinced the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services we would have continued to prosper under his leadership".

Reacting to those changes, Allardyce said: "I'm shocked, disappointed and disgusted that the football club didn't have the decency to tell me, my director of football and my staff about the changes".

Shakhtar Donetsk coach Paulo Fonseca has also been linked with Everton as well as West Ham, while Louis van Gaal, Andre Villas-Boas, Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe are other names reportedly in the frame.
