Netflix could save Designated Survivor following cancellation at ABC

Designated Survivor

After NBC let it go, Netflix ostensibly showed immediate interest in continuing Kiefer Sutherland-starring political thriller "Designated Survivor" on its streaming service.

According to Deadline, the talks are in the early stages and are complicated because Hulu has the US SVOD rights.

Originally created by David Guggenheim, Amy B. Harris was the first Designated Survivor showrunner, though she was replaced by Jon Harmon Feldman when the show was officially picked up.

The news was somewhat surprising, as the show had been expected to receive a season three renewal; although live ratings weren't particularly strong, its delayed viewing numbers were impressive, and it had been profitable for the network thanks to its global distribution deal with Netflix.

Shenmue 3 Release Date Delayed to 2019 in Shocking Development
A teaser trailer released back in 2017 was criticized for the bizarrely blank facial expressions of its characters. Looks like we won't be able to play Shenmue III in 2019, perhaps not surprisingly.

In fact, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey stated that the high turnover of showrunners was one of the main reasons for its cancellation.

The production of the show has been turbulent with four showrunners in two seasons, and a fifth signing on for a potential third season.

Ratings-wise, the show did fairly well early on, averaging nearly six million viewers, but more recently it had only been averaging around four million viewers, which placed it near the bottom of ABC's top drama series.

We'll keep you posted on the status of Designated Survivor season 3.
