Michigan State University on Wednesday announced a $500 million settlement with more than 300 women and girls who said they were assaulted by sports doctor Larry Nassar in the worst sex-abuse case in sports history.
The settlement, which covers all 332 current claimants, will cost Michigan State $500 million.
Michigan State didn't disclose how it will pay the settlement.
"I don't think they can ever be made whole, but this is a step in the right direction", he said.
Sources connected to the survivors tell 6 News that the announcement will come from the university today.
The institution said no confidentiality agreements or no-disclosure agreements would be attached to the settlement, which it described as agreed to "in principle".
Also, the parties must act to address items necessary to finalize the agreement. Lawsuits against USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympic Committee and others remain unresolved. Al also reads the statement of Rachel Denhollander concerning the settlement, and gets reactions from callers who want to voice their opinions of MSU's handling of the case and of the settlement terms.
Michigan State To Pay $500M To Larry Nassar Victims
The chairman of Michigan State University's governing board says the school is "truly sorry" for what disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar's victims and families went through.
MSU Trustee Dianne Byrum had this to say after the settlement was reached, "I am pleased a settlement has been reached with the courageous young women whose lives have been impacted by this tragic situation". "We appreciate the diligent efforts of Mick Grewal and the survivors' attorneys across the nation who worked to obtain this measure of justice and healing". She says the deal will help the "sister survivors" move forward, and her decision to come forward publicly in 2016 was motivated by the need for accountability and reform, "so that other little children don't live the nightmares we lived". We will continue working as a Board to address the necessary changes and improvements that are needed at our university.
