European Union and Iran seek to save nuclear deal after U.S. pullout

A man looks out from an Israeli position in the Golan Heights

Germany acknowledged it could be hard to protect companies doing business with Iran as a senior USA official renewed a threat of sanctions against European firms following Washington's decision to pull out of a nuclear deal with Tehran.

A spokesperson for May's office said, "The Prime Minister made clear that the United Kingdom condemns the Iranian missile attacks against Israeli forces and called on Iran to refrain from any further attacks".

Russian media further cited Zarif as saying that Tehran and Moscow would do their utmost to keep the Iran deal in place less than a week after US President Donald Trump announced Washington's withdrawal from the JCPOA despite earlier global warnings and pleas for the White House not to attack yet another worldwide agreement.

Bolton said Europe was still digesting Trump's move last week. It also came over the opposition of China and Russian Federation, which are also party to the 2015 deal. But Trump has described it as a "terrible deal". A full assessment of the likely impact of the decision will only be possible following receipt of clarification of the position of the remaining JCPOA partners, who have recently reaffirmed their support for the JCPOA, together with further clarification from OFAC in relation to the management of the "wind-down" periods envisaged under the decision.

Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said, however, that it could be hard to protect European firms from any fallout from the USA decision.

The Italian diplomat's suggested method of keeping the deal alive seems to be increased cooperation with Iran.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the United States was withdrawing from a 2015 deal negotiated by the Obama administration.

Tehran has warned it is prepared to resume "industrial-scale" uranium enrichment "without any restrictions" unless Europe can provide solid guarantees that it can maintain the economic benefits it gained from the nuclear agreement despite the United States reimposing sanctions.

Let's get real. Iran seeks to subjugate the Arab states within an Iranian caliphate, or simply to impose its version of Islam on the entire Arab world directly or indirectly through its proxy states, such as Lebanon and Syria.

The EU's energy commissioner is also traveling this week to Iran to discuss strengthening European energy support to Iran. The embassy move, they say, will eventually lead to greater regional stability.

Zarif also called the US decision to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as "dangerous".

French President Emmanuel Macron held phone talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, according to a Kremlin statement, which said they had "confirmed Russia and France's commitment to make the deal work".

Plane-makers Boeing and Airbus are probably the highest-profile casualties of the reimposed sanctions, as they had been planning to start selling aircraft to the Islamic Republic for the first time.

"Unfortunately getting out of the Iran agreement, I think we're now starting from scratch with Iran", Paul said, adding he thought there was "potential" to add more to the agreement before Trump's decision to exit unilaterally from the deal.

Europe, he added, must have an "independent financial tool" that would "allow our companies to trade freely in places Europe decided it was necessary or useful to do trade".

After Trump's decision, the Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned nine Iranian individuals and entities including those with links to Iran's Revolutionary Guard.
