Brexit: Scotland set to reject EU Withdrawal Bill

"I have said time and again it is unacceptable that the legislation gives the UK Government the power to ban the Scottish Parliament from legislating on devolved areas for up to seven years without the parliament's consent".

The Scottish government claims that clause 11 of the Bill, which is making its way through parliament at Westminster, undermines the devolution settlement with Scotland.

But Scottish Labour's Brexit spokesman Neil Findlay said: "As the party that delivered devolution, Labour will always seek to defend and strengthen it".

Scottish Secretary David Mundell defended the UK Government's position, telling Today: "Obviously, it's up to the Scottish Parliament to take whatever decision they want to take".

If UK Prime Minister Theresa May continues to insist on the necessity to pass the withdrawal bill in its current form, it will become the first time in history when the British government adopts a law against the will of Scotland, which may deepen the rift between them.

Plaid AM Adam Price said: "We are joining a very select club of national Parliaments, if we pass this motion today, that have voluntarily chose to cede their own authority".

The Tory MP added: "We have worked hard over the past year to try to secure the support of the Scottish Government, and have put a considerable offer on the table with the vast majority of devolved powers automatically flowing from the European Union to Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh".

The Scottish government has urged the parliament in Edinburgh to refuse "legislative consent" for the highly contested European Union (Withdrawal) Bill now being debated by lawmakers in London.

It will be up to ministers in London to decide then if those powers should go to the Scottish and Welsh parliaments, or if they should become part of United Kingdom wide common frameworks.

Cavs looking ahead to game two
But our starters have got to be ready to throw the first punch. "They punked us", he told ESPN . He's always responded big and I imagine it will be a lot like Game 2 against Indiana.

The UK Government has balked at this on around 24 of the powers being repatriated from Brussels, unwilling to give MSPs an effective veto.

The Scottish vote came as Ms May's cabinet subcommittee on Brexit met amid enduring differences over Britain's customs relationship with the European Union after Brexit.

"The solution, as this Parliament has agreed, is straightforward".

Tomkins insisted the UK Government had moved to "accommodate fair concerns raised by all parties in Scotland". "Even at this late stage our door remains open".

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, leader of the secessionist Scottish National Party (SNP), said Britain was heading into "uncharted constitutional territory".

The Scottish Tories called on Labour and the Liberal Democrats to join with them in supporting the legislation rather than siding with the SNP.

"The SNP has taken the wrong path today".

But SNP MSP Ash Denham responded: "The Tories think they can do whatever they like to Scotland and get away with it".
