Police to provide update on McArthur case this morning

Police in Toronto have charged alleged serial killer Bruce McArthur with an eighth murder over the death of Sri Lankan man who had not been reported missing.

McArthur has also been charged with the killings of Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Soroush Mahmudi, Skandaraj Navaratnam and Abdulbasir Faizi. He had been living in Scarborough and had "distant" relatives in the Toronto area.

Investigators said he was identified after they took the rare step of releasing photographs of his corpse and appealed to the public for help.

"I think we've all seen in the media so-called experts who tell us that serial killers don't start in their late fifties", Idsinga says.

Police received more than 500 tips after releasing the photo and whittled the list of potential identities down to 70 potential names last Wednesday.

So far police have not found any links between Kanagaratnam and Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village or LGBT communities. After receiving assistance from an unnamed global government agency, Idsinga said police were able to identify the victim. Kanagaratnam wasn't reported missing in Canada or in Sri Lanka, Idsinga said, and there is no evidence linking him to the Gay Village in Toronto. Another was a recent immigrant with a drug problem.

"There's enough information on the backgrounds of these people that people can draw their own conclusions on that", Idsinga said.

Police allege Kanagaratnam, 37, was killed sometime between September 3 and December 14, 2015, but Idsinga would not elaborate on what brought them to that conclusion. Police plan to search them once the weather warms in early May. It's unknown whether he will be facing further charges, but investigators are looking into murders and disappearances going back as far as 1975.

The remains of seven men, six of them identified as being among those named in the murder charges, have been found in garden planters in a property in the Leaside neighbourhood where an acquaintance let Mr. McArthur store his tools. His lawyer has previously declined to comment on the case and didn't immediately respond to messages for comment on Monday.
