Line of thunderstorms prompts tornado and flash flood watches across region

High winds, heavy rains ravage Northeast Ohio

With heavy rainfall expected over the weekend, the local Upper Thames River Conservation Authority is warning of possible flooding in the local region.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for southwestern Pennsylvania, along with parts of eastern OH and northern West Virginia.

The trade winds will keep the heaviest showers focused on windward and mauka areas of the smaller islands, but the trade winds will be strong enough to push some of those showers leeward.

The tornado watch was issued at 3:13 p.m. and remains in effect until 11 p.m. for 26 counties in Southwest and central Virginia.

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.

Gov. Tom Wolf issued a statement saying that Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency officials urge residents to stay informed of weather conditions and be prepared in case of flooding.

Additional rainfall of up to 1 inch is expected over parts of the area. With heavy rain, rivers can exceed their banks and ponding can occur on the roads. One inbound lane could reopen as early as Monday morning, city officials said.

It's already the wettest start ever to a year in greater Pittsburgh.
