Donald Trump 'morally unfit to be president': ex-FBI chief James Comey

Former FBI director James Comey is seen here being interviewed by ABC News. Comey spoke about the 2016 presidential election and the Hillary Clinton email probe

In a lengthy sit-down with ABC's George Stephanopoulos to discuss his new book, A Higher Loyalty, Comey offered his sharpest rebuke yet of Trump's presidency and labeled his former boss a "stain" on those who worked for him.

In a wide-ranging interview with ABC News on Sunday, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey said that there's "certainly some evidence of obstruction of justice" on the part of President Donald Trump, and said it is possible that Russians have compromising information about the president. "My loyalty's supposed to be to the American people and to the institution", Comey said in the interview.

"People in this country need to stand up and go to the voting booth and vote their values", he said.

Stephanopoulos also asked if Comey believed the president obstructed justice, to which he replied: "Possibly".

Comeys explosive book, which is apparently highly critical of Trump, will hit the bookshelves next week.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, a Virginia Republican, said on Fox News Channel on Sunday that Comey was "out for reveng" against Trump. Comey compares his interactions with Trump to his days prosecuting organized crime leaders: "As I found myself thrust into the Trump orbit, I once again was having flashbacks to my earlier career as a prosecutor against the Mob".

"I think it's possible".

Trump accused Comey of lying to Congress and exonerating Hillary Clinton in a 2016 investigation because of her strong poll numbers in the presidential race.

Comey reiterated that he hoped such tapes existed and said the secretive nature of the meeting might imply Trump knew he was flouting convention.

Former FBI Director James Comey will break his silence Sunday night in an exclusive interview with ABC News.

- Trump was fixated on the story about a dossier alleging that he had Russian prostitutes urinate on a Moscow bed where Barack Obama once slept.

But Comey said he does not want to see Trump impeached. Sunday, he intensified the rhetoric, writing, "Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!"

There was no reaction from Trump after the interview but his pre-emptive tweets made clear his thoughts.

On a more-personal level, Comey describes Trump repeatedly asking him to consider investigating an allegation involving Trump and Russian prostitutes urinating on a bed in a Moscow hotel, in order to prove it was a lie.

That argument was startling given that Comey's handling of the email investigation, including his disclosure shortly before the election that the FBI had reopened its probe, enraged Democrats.

'I don't know. These are more words I never thought I'd utter about a president of the United States, but it's possible'.

Comey has faced harsh criticism from both Republicans and Democrats and his book gives him a chance to defend his actions, according to CNN.

Sarah Kendzior, a political writer, chose to focus on Mr Comey's ABC interview, criticising "superficial questions".

The assertion that Trump demanded loyalty was "another of his many lies", Trump tweeted.

She says she rose above politics throughout the email investigation, and never discussed it with anyone from the Clinton campaign or the Democratic National Committee.
