American Linden, Japan's Kawauchi win Boston Marathon

Despite the torrential downpour, the Boston Marathon went on as planned this morning and for the first time since 1985, an American woman won the race.

Linden, 34, who lives in MI, finished second in Boston back in 2011. It's also the first marathon win of the 34-year-old's career.

Today's win will surely make Linden forget about her disappointment in the 2011 Boston Marathon when she missed the grand title by just two seconds. "Helping her helped me, and I kinda got my legs back from there".

"For me, these are the best conditions possible", Kawauchi said after the race.

The race was ultimately won by Desi Linden, with an unofficial time of 2:39:54 - more than 10 minutes off her personal record, notes Time Magazine. Linden finished fourth in the Boston Marathon a year ago. Linden is also a two-time Olympian - she came in seventh at the 2016 Rio Games, and had to drop out a few miles into the marathon at the 2012 London Games due to a stress fracture.

Linden won despite waiting for her running partner, Shalane Flanagan, when Flanagan had to take a detour for a bathroom break.

Linden saw Flanagan making an emergency break (the athlete darted into a portable toilet) and chose to slow down and make sure her friend and competitor was alright.

"Honestly I just felt miserable and sometimes when you pick it up, you forget how you're feeling", said Linden, a 34-year-old from MI.

The runner was convinced the 2018 Boston Marathon was going to be her swan song - a final chance to win the 26.2-mile race.

Linden then made her move, passing Daska, then moments later overtaking Chesir for the lead and never giving it up. That was more than four minutes better than second-place finisher Sarah Sellers - one of seven Americans in the top 10 - but the slowest time for a women's victor in Boston since 1978.
