US, UK and France Launch Military Strikes on Syria

US President Donald Trump's threat of military retaliation in Syria have raised risks of a direct confrontation with Russia

"We call upon Russian Federation to honor its commitment to ensure the Assad regime dismantles its chemical weapons program and never uses chemical weapons again".

He added: "Could not have had a better result".

Russia's Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi said the hail of missiles did little damage, claiming Syrian fighters, using the 30-year-old missile defense systems Russian Federation had given them, were able to bring them down.

Donald Trump on Saturday declared "mission accomplished" for a US-led allied missile attack on Syria's chemical weapons program.

Mr Trump's UN ambassador Nikki Haley told the session the president had made it clear that if Mr Assad used poison gas again, "the United States is locked and loaded".

While some people are cautious about laying the blame for the chemical attack on Douma at Syrian President Bashar Assad's door, Britain, France and the U.S. believe there is no other plausible culprit - citing a growing body of evidence against the regime.

"There have been many instances when we have seen them using those chemical weapons".

"The lack of an appropriate response encourages further attacks with the use of weapons which are both banned under global law and blatantly unhumanitarian", said the Polish foreign ministry on its website.

Paris' declassified document, seven pages long, asserts that Assad has maintained a covert chemical arms program since vowing to shut it down five years ago.

Vice President Mike Pence, in Peru for a meeting of regional leaders, said "there will be a price to pay" involving military force if Syrian chemical weapons are used again.

President Donald Trump says he is "prepared to sustain" strikes against Syria until the use of chemical agents stops.

Syria chemical attack was fabricated: Russian Federation
The government, however, said evacuations from Douma were ongoing and no Syrian government forces had entered the town. Syria and its ally, Russia, deny any such attack, which activists say killed more than 43 people last weekend.

In the days after the attack on Douma, the Syrian government and its Iranian and Russian allies got what they wanted - the rebel group that had been holding out there agreed to be evacuated.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called the strikes a "one-time shot" with no additional military action planned for now.

In a statement issued by the Kremlin earlier Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for the emergency Security Council meeting and said the strikes had a "destructive influence on the entire system of global relations".

During an address to the Security Council, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all states "to show restraint in these unsafe circumstances and to avoid any acts that could escalate matters and worsen the suffering of the Syrian people". The strikes were the biggest foreign military action so far against Syria's regime. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, while caveating: "I support these air strikes, done in coordination with our allies, but remain adamant that the administration must develop a comprehensive strategy for ending the Syrian civil war".

"The Syrian regime and its supporters are responsible for the gravest violations of worldwide humanitarian law in modern history", Braithwaite said.

French authorities said the allies don't seek any military escalation, nor confrontation with Russian Federation.

"So there is no practicable alternative to the use of force to degrade and deter the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian Regime".

What have France, the United States and the United Kingdom said?

The U.K. -based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syrian war through activists on the ground, said installations belonging to the country's elite Republican Guards were also targeted.

Macron, who called Putin on Friday to discuss the situation, still plans to travel to a security conference in St Petersburg in May, where they are expected to meet, an official said.
