United Kingdom jets fire at Syrian base in 'limited and targeted strike'

The Kremlin on Friday claimed that British intelligence forces helped stage the attack on the Syrian town of Douma last weekend.

May later told reporters that the Western missiles had struck a chemical weapons storage and production facility, a chemical weapons research centre and a military bunker involved in chemical weapons attacks.

She added that she would address parliament on Monday. "I hope that this will be a deterrent to him and obviously I hope that it will mean no further humanitarian suffering by the Syrian people as a result of the use of chemical weapons".

Dozens of civilians were killed in the chemical weapons attack in Douma.

A U.K. Foreign Office spokesperson said: "Russia has wielded its United Nations security council veto six times since February 2017 to shield the Assad regime from scrutiny for its use of chemical weapons".

The joint attack by the United States, Britain, and France, which began at 3:55 a.m. local time (0055 GMT), launched some 110 missiles targeting Syrian military sites in the Syrian capital Damascus and elsewhere, Syria's state news agency SANA said, citing the military.

The US, UK and France have launched military strikes on Syria following the suspected chemical attack by the Assad regime. Moscow has denied any involvement.

Stewart McDonald of the Scottish National Party said: "The PM has engaged United Kingdom forces in gesture bombing, with no major worldwide consensus and no long term plan to halt the use of chemical weapons or deliver peace".

She said nearly a century of global aversion to the use of chemical weapons had been eroded in Douma and Salisbury.

US President Donald Trump has talked with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May on phone over the three nations' collective strikes on Syria.

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said sidelining parliament was "a serious mistake", while leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas accused May of timing the strikes to "avoid a debate in parliament", which she described as "outrageous".

Johnson said Britain would take every possible precaution to defend against any Russian cyber attacks but that London would keep talking to Moscow as it did not "relish" their hard relationship.

In a separate call, Trump thanked May for her support of the strikes.

"Bombs won't save lives or bring about peace", he said.

Many politicians including some in May's own Conservative Party, had backed his call for parliament to be asked before any military strike.

Carried out by Survation, one survey of just over 2,000 people taken after the strikes were launched, found that 40 percent were opposed.

Former prime minister David Cameron lost a parliamentary vote on air strikes against Assad's forces in 2013 when 30 Conservative lawmakers voted against action, with many Britons wary of entering another conflict after interventions in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya failed to bring stability to the region.
