UN Security council fails to adopt Russian resolution on Syria

Chemical Attacks in Syria UN Council Must Prevent Syria'Spiralling Out of Control, Says Antonio Guterres

Russian Federation and its ally Syria called the attack fabricated and said no evidence of chemical weapons use exists in Douma.

Russia's Canadian embassy tweeted, "Washington & its UK/French allies should and will be held #responsible for this brazen act of #aggression and disregard of worldwide law".

There was no word from Russian President Vladimir Putin himself, though his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said Moscow was in contact with Washington to discuss an atmosphere which he described as alarming.

Western powers continued to weigh their options on Friday over possible strikes against Syria's regime as pressure built to avoid an escalation following a warning from Russian Federation that military action could lead to "war".

The strikes were a response to an alleged chemical weapons attack carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime on April 7.

According to a statement by the French presidency, Macron called for dialogue between France and Russian Federation to "continue and intensify" to bring peace and stability to Syria.

The Russian leader warned against "ill-considered and unsafe actions ... that would have consequences beyond conjecture".

French President Emmanuel Macron also said he had "proof" that the Syrian government had attacked Douma with chemical weapons.

France's UN Ambassador Francois Delattre said the result of the vote sends "a clear message" that Security Council members recognized the need for the airstrikes, and "their proportional and targeted nature".

The council failed on Tuesday to approve three draft resolutions on chemical weapons attacks in Syria.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also said that following Syrian rebels' withdrawal from eastern Ghouta, stockpiles of chemical agents were found there.

John Hannah, senior counselor at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, who has worked with Bolton in the past, said Bolton was opposed to "empty symbolic gestures that make us feel good but have no strategic effects".

"This is grotesque, it is a blatant lie, it is the worst piece of fake news we've yet seen from the Russian propaganda machine", Pierce told reporters.

Around 30 missiles were fired in the attack, and a third of them were shot down, the official said.

The investigators, who are only mandated to determine if chemical weapons were used and not who used them, were expected to start their investigations into the Douma incident on Saturday, the Netherlands-based agency said.

Trump himself appeared on Thursday to cast doubt on at least the timing of any US -led military action, tweeting: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

"This will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons", he said. "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!" A week later, the government regained full control of the town following a surrender deal with the rebels there, and on Sunday it deployed another 5,000 security forces in Douma.

Bolton has called the Syrian civil war a "sideshow" and said he is much more concerned about Iran's role there than about whether Assad remains in power.
