Newcastle v Arsenal - story of the match

Newcastle United virtually guaranteed their Premier League safety as they came from a goal down to beat Arsenal 2-1 at a spring-like St James' Park on Sunday.

Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie scored for Newcastle to cancel out Alexandre Lacazette's opener.

But it was Newcastle who landed the knockout blow in the 68th minute.

The second half was a much tighter affair but it was the Magpies who got the victor in the 68th minute when Matt Ricthie calmly slotted home from close range to seal all three points for Rafael Benítez's men.

Perez levelled the scores just before the half-hour mark with his third goal in as many league games, though, after the Gunners failed to deal with a long ball from the impressive Jonjo Shelvey.

Wenger said, "It's the story of the season".

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insists that the decision to delay introducing VAR for at least another year is "very bad" for the Premier League.

United Kingdom agrees on 'need to take action' over Syria
The prime minister said that Britain would do all it could to ensure humanitarian access for all civilians stranded in Syria . Mrs May said earlier Wednesday that the government was still assessing who was responsible for the attack on Douma .

It was the away side who emerged the more alert of the two at the start of the second half as they probed for space in between the Newcastle defence.

Calum Chambers could have restored Arsenal's lead before the interval, but the defender shot wide from Mustafi's knock down.

With little to play for in the league, Arsenal were unable to find enough momentum to maintain their recent revival, even though Lacazette opened the scoring in the 14th minute.

Just to rub it in, Matt Ritchie then sealed the three points in Newcastle's favour when Islam Slimani's headed pass bobbled through to him on the edge of the Arsenal 18-yard box via a Perez flick and the midfielder obliged by clipping home the victor.

It was nearly 3-1 a few minutes later when Kenedy was played through on goal by a great pass from Slimani but via a deflection from Mustafi, Kenedy'shot came back off the bar with Cech beaten.

Wow! Quite a few changes there!

Arsenal's defeat means they remain on 54 points going into their final five games of the season.
