Moscow questions French report claiming Syrian govt 'retained chemical weapons since 2013'

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May said the government was right to order airstrikes against Syrian chemical weapons facilities, as opposition lawmakers complained about the lack of a parliamentary vote and accused her of being led by Donald Trump.

Reuters cited an unidentified senior official in a regional alliance backing Assad as saying that Russian Federation had provided an "early warning" about the planned air strikes to its allies in Syria and that "all military bases were evacuated a few days ago".

"The political solution is the sole way to solve the crisis in Syria and to preserve its stability and unity", Momani said.

Syria was able to down most of the missiles launched by U.S, United Kingdom and France, Russian Defense Ministry revealed on Saturday.

The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic says it has confirmed at least 34 chemical attacks since 2013, many of which it said used chlorine or sarin, a nerve agent, The New York Times has reported.

Jordan, he said, stands with the Syrians' right to end their suffering and the crisis in their country, calling for honest efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis.

"The goal is simple: to stop the regime from using chemical weapons again", she added.

Iran, the Assad regime's other key ally, called the USA -led strikes an "aggression" that was "a flagrant violation of worldwide laws and a disregard for Syria's right of national sovereignty and territorial integrity", according to Iran's semi-official FARS News Agency.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said no additional strikes were planned.

The report quotes Khamenei as calling the leaders of the United States, Britain and France - the countries that launched the attack - "criminals".

On Monday seven Iranian personnel were among 14 people killed in an early-morning strike on the T-4 airbase in Syria, with regime allies Iran and Russian Federation blaming Israel for the attack.

USA military officials have confirmed that the strike was created to degrade Syria's chemical weapons capability without killing civilians.

"We're so happy to see that someone felt for us", said Nadia Sidawi, 46, one of thousands of displaced Douma residents now living in northern Syria after they were evacuated from the town.

In her comments, May also alluded to a nerve agent attack in Britain last month on a former Russian spy and his daughter. A YouGov poll showed just one in five members of the public support a strike on Syria.

The third target was a chemical weapons equipment storage facility and an important command post, also west of Homs, Dunford said. In Homs, one of the missiles was derailed injuring three people, he said. Dunford confirmed the regime responded with surface-to-air weapons but was unable to say whether any US missiles were shot down.

"To Iran and to Russian Federation I ask: What kind of a nation wants to be associated with the mass murder of innocent men, women and children?" he said.

"Initial indications are that the precision of the Storm Shadow weapons and meticulous target planning have resulted in a successful attack", it said.

The strike, which was conducted with French and British forces, employed 105 missiles and other weapons at three chemical weapons facilities.

Malashenko said Putin's statement denouncing the US -led air strikes as an "act of aggression against a sovereign state" was a predictable expression of outrage, but that Moscow was unlikely to respond militarily in defense of its ally.

Russian President Vladimir Putin denounced the strike launched by the United States and its allies as an "act of aggression" that will exacerbate humanitarian catastrophe in Syria.

Syria has denied carrying out the Douma attack and its ally, Russia, had warned that Western military strikes would risk starting a war.

The aerial bombardment came just days after Trump taunted Moscow on Twitter after its envoy to Lebanon was quoted as saying that Russian Federation, which backs Assad militarily together with Iran, would shoot down any US missiles launched against Syrian targets.

President Donald Trump on Saturday hailed a US-led missile assault on Syria's regime as "perfectly executed", despite the limited nature of the strikes and Russia's condemnation, which further heightened tensions between the Cold War foes.

"America does not seek an indefinite presence in Syria under no circumstances", he said.

Trump chastised Syria's two main allies, Russia and Iran, for their roles in supporting "murderous dictators", and noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin had guaranteed a 2013 global agreement for Assad to get rid of all of his chemical weapons.

Douma and the sprawling eastern Ghouta region near the capital, Damascus, had been under rebel control since 2012 and was a thorn in the side of President Bashar Assad's government, threatening his seat of power with missiles and potential advances for years.
