Hawkins regained conscious and was able to sit up while still at the scene of his collapse.

Team Scotland later confirmed that Hawkins had been taken to hospital for medical review "as is standard procedure".

The statement added: "He is being supported by Team Scotland medical staff and there are no major concerns at this stage".

"He is undergoing further tests as a precaution and we all wish him a speedy recovery".

Hawkins was left unattended for several minutes, much to the dismay of commentators, reporters and viewers.

Sports commentator Steve Cram said it was "a disgrace" that it took so long for any paramedics to attend to Hawkins.

The marathon was eventually won by Australia's Mike Shelley in two hours, 16 minutes, 46 seconds.

"I wasn't sure what was going on", the Australian said, about seeing Hawkins in trouble.

As he lay on the ground, spectators hovered over him and were seen talking to the fallen athlete. "I'm sorry if you're watching this at home, it's really distressing", Cram said. " He explained. "you can not wait in the finish line".

Shelley won gold, ahead of Uganda's Munyo Mutai and Scotland's Robbie Simpson.

"Unfortunately, these incredible athletes sometimes run themselves to exhaustion and there's rarely a marathon where somebody doesn't collapse".
