Commonwealth Games: Saina Nehwal defeats PV Sindhu to win women's singles gold

CWG: Saina sets date with Sindhu in women's singles final

Saina Nehwal won her second Commonwealth Games Gold as she beat compatriot PV Sindhu in the women's singles gold medal match at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on Sunday. She was the pillar of India's gold-winning campaign in the team championship earlier, playing every one of the singles matches due to Sindhu's injury. Sindhu, on her part, was motivated enough to cruise a comeback but Saina was simply too hot to handle, hardly allowing Sindhu an inch of space to breath.

Saina had won the first game comfortably but she was made to work for the title in the second game.

Saina has beaten Sindhu twice on the BWF circuit in the 2018 Indonesia Masters and 2014 India Grand Prix Gold and once in the 2017 National Badminton Championships. On the other hand, Saina had to battle hard in her semi-final contest against 2014 silver medallist Kristy Gilmour whom she eventually defeated 21-14 18-21 21-17 in 68 minutes. India's medal tally has risen to 47, with 20 gold, 13 silver and 14 bronze. But Saina, used her experience to the fore to keep the Rio Olympics Silver medallist to her control and clinch the game which was neck-in-neck from the onset.

Not yet, said Sindhu, who smashed one wide of Saina to make it 21-21 only for Saina to smash herself back to within one point of a gold medal.
