Alleged Chemical Attack in Syria: Russia blames Britain

Russia warns US against military action over alleged chemical attack in Syria

MICHELE KELEMEN, BYLINE: In another diplomatic showdown in the U.N. Security Council, Russia's ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, called an emergency meeting that seemed aimed at one thing - to head off USA military strikes, which he says would violate the U.N. charter and put Russian troops in harm's way. Syria's foreign ministry also condemned the airstrikes today, calling them a flagrant violation of the global law.

Guterres also said a failure to hold someone accountable for the attack could encourage more.

Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said there was "clear information demonstrating Assad's culpability". "Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon".

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that France has proof that Syria used chemical weapons against its own people in Douma on April 7. Russian Federation feels threatened by the USA decision to strike Syrian targets in retaliation for the alleged chemical attack in Douma on April 7, which Moscow believes was staged.

While the prospect of US-led military action that could lead to confrontation with Russian Federation hung over the Middle East, the White House accused Syria of carrying out a toxic gas attack on April 7 that killed dozens of people in the town of Douma, near Damascus.

As ministers discussed the crisis yesterday, United States officials claimed to have evidence that chlorine gas and a nerve agent were used in a Syrian government attack on the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta at the weekend that left around 70 dead.

In a series of Twitter broadsides that coincided with Russia-focused segments on his favored channel Fox News, Trump opened the door to military attacks against the Kremlin's Syrian allies and voiced the toughest anti-Russian rhetoric of his presidency.

The draft would also give council support to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' fact-finding mission that Sweden's U.N. Ambassador Olof Skoog said "is on its way" to Syria to determine whether chemical weapons were used in the Damascus suburb of Douma last weekend.

Relations between Russian Federation and the U.S. have taken a nosedive in recent years over the Syria conflict as well as Moscow's annexation of Crimea, accusations of interference in the 2016 United States election and most recently a spy poisoning in the UK.

Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi of the Russian military's General Staff said the strikes have not caused any casualties and Syrian military facilities targeted by the U.S., Britain and France have suffered only minor damage, the Associated Press reported.

KELEMEN: She made the comments just two days after Trump warned Russian Federation via Twitter that USA missiles will be coming to Syria, quote, "nice and new and smart".

The Russian military said on March 13 that it would respond to any USA strike on Syria by targeting any missiles and launchers involved.

Russian Ambassador to Beirut Alexander Zasypkin cited orders by Putin. The U.S. Defense Department said it did not comment on potential military actions. The U.S. has not yet said how the airstrikes were actually conducted.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria", Trump wrote.

The US, France and the United Kingdom have reportedly backed the former's plan of striking Syria, in response to the alleged chemical attack.

In response, Russia's Foreign Ministry said: "Smart missiles should fly towards terrorists, not towards the lawful government".

"We welcome this operation that articulates the conscience of all humanity in the face of the Douma attack which has a strong suspicion of being carried out by the regime", the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Russian aircraft were scrambled in response to reports of seven USA spy planes near the coastal regions of Tartus and Lattakia.

At the House hearing, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, a Democrat of Hawaii, disputed Trump's legal authority to act without congressional authority and suggested that a US strike would lead to war with Russian Federation.
