Iran Condemns US-Led Strikes on Syria, Warns about Consequences

Hit among others were a scientific research facility in Damascus and Syrian army depots in the Homs area, state media said, and a Reuters witness said the Syrian capital was rocked by explosions as smoke rose into the sky.

Communication on the line is a near-daily occurrence created to stop mishaps as a US-led coalition conducts an air war against the Islamic State group while Russian Federation pursues its own goals of propping up Assad.

Boris Johnson says the world is 'united in its disgust for any use of chemical weapons, especially against civilians'.

Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until the Assad government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

- US President Donald Trump condemned Syria's two main allies, Russian Federation and Iran, for supporting "murderous dictators".

Syrian officials have continually denied their forces used chemical weapons.

Syria's Foreign Ministry called on the worldwide community "to strongly condemn this aggression", warning it would "pose a threat to global peace and security as a whole", in a statement published by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency.

Speaking alongside Defence Minister Florence Parly, he said the strikes carried out overnight by France, Britain and the USA were "legitimate" in retaliation for the suspected chemical weapons attack in the rebel-held Syrian enclave of Douma last week.

"A predesigned scenario is being implemented", he said.

"These are crimes of a monster", said Trump, adding that Bashar al-Assad's "recent attack... are a direct result of Russia's failure..."

Trump indicated the strikes would continue until the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons ends, reports CNN.

"A significant body of information including intelligence indicates the Syrian regime was responsible for this attack", she said.

Last year, Trump said that the use of chemical weapons in Syria "crosses a lot of lines for me".

Trump, speaking from the White House late Friday, said the attack last weekend was "a significant escalation" of Assad's use of chemical weapons and warranted a stepped-up worldwide response.

British Ministry of Defense, in a statement issued Saturday morning said it has joined in "a precision strike on Syrian installations involved in the regime's use of chemical weapons against its own people".

The regime and its key ally Russian Federation deny any chemical attack.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the missile strikes an "act of aggression against a sovereign state" and said they were against the United Nations' charter.

The Syrian conflict pits a complex myriad of parties against each other, with Russian Federation and Iran giving Assad military and political help while fractured opposition forces have had varying levels of support at different times from the West, Arab states, and Turkey.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said she had authorized British armed forces "to conduct coordinated and targeted strikes to degrade the Syrian regime's chemical weapons capability".

While military officials are still assessing the effectiveness of the strikes, there are growing questions about the long-term impact.

Le Drian said France, which has backed opponents of Assad throughout the civil war, would swiftly take new political initiatives to find a solution to the crisis. These hardliners, along with influential USA allies Israel and Saudi Arabia, want Washington to counter Iran's growing power in Syria - even if it means risking a perilous stand-off with Russian Federation.

Brian Katulis at the Center for American Progress, is more hopeful. The operation was carried out at 3 a.m. (0100 GMT), she said, adding naval and air means had been used, including an air raid launched from several air bases in France. "I think that's what the president is trying to do and I think he did the right thing". The Russian military said the missiles were fired from United States ships in the Red Sea as well as from tactical aircraft above the Mediterranean and by U.S. strategic bombers from near the Al-Tanf base.

The jets are likely to have taken off from RAF Akrotiri, the Royal Air Force base on Cyprus in the eastern Mediterranean.

The second site targeted was a chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs, while the third was at a chemical equipment storage facility and important command post.

Theresa May said "everything possible" was done to deter civilian casualties.

Dunford noted that the United States military did not coordinate any targets or any plans with the Russians ahead of Friday's strikes.
