3 people injured in shooting at Maryland high school, officials say

The 16-year-old girl was gravely injured and is in critical condition, the sheriff's office and UM Prince George's Hospital Center said today. "The building is orderly and the Sheriff's Office is conducting an investigation".

A 14-year-old boy who was in the hallway was wounded during the shooting but was released Wednesday from MedStar St. Mary's Hospital after surgery on his thigh. The female student was hospitalized in critical condition and the male student was in stable condition, Cameron said. "We know you don't want to hurt anyone", Tichenor said he heard the officer say before two shots were fired. They have not released a motive for the shooting. It wasn't immediately clear whether the shooter took his own life or was killed by the officer's bullet, officials said.

Great Mills High School is in Great Mills, Maryland, about 70 miles southeast of Washington, D.C. It has more than 1,500 students, about 56% of them minority students, and its four-year graduation rate is 91%, according to the school's 2015-16 improvement plan. Another boy, 14, also was injured. Authorities said it wasn't clear how he was shot.

Cameron identified the suspected shooter as Austin Wyatt Rollins. Within a minute after Rollins fired his first shot, Gaskill had responded and fired a shot of his own.

Last week, students at Great Mills High School walked out of class as part of a student-led protest against school violence in the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. "Rollins and the female victim had a prior relationship which recently ended".

A day after the eruption of gun violence in one of the sleepy community's schools, the few residents who ventured out amid a snowstorm blanketing the East Coast praised a school resource officer who responded inside of 60 seconds and fired off a shot at the attacker.

Other Stoneman Douglas students contrasted the Maryland school resource officer's quick response with the Stoneman Douglas officer's decision not to enter the school and engage the shooter.
