Around 37 million grown-ups - around 17 percent - detailed binge drinking, according to the study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Kentucky, Arkansas, Hawaii, and MS ranked highest for most alcohol consumed while binge drinking. The questions they asked included information of how often the respondents drank in the past month, and how much they consumed.

Excessive drinking can kill you - and claims the lives of an estimated 88,000 Americans per year, according to a first-of-its-kind study.

Thenew government study reveals that in 2015, American adults drank more than 17 billion alcoholic beverages while binge drinking. He said that USA officials could increase alcohol taxes, restrict the number of days or hours in which establishments can sell alcohol, hold businesses culpable for illegally serving underage or intoxicated customer, and place limits on the number of outlets that could sell alcohol in a given location. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks for men, or four or more drinks for women, in about two hours. About 4 in 5 binge drinks are consumed by men. They drink an average of about seven drinks per binge, meaning they chug a collective 17.5 billion drinks each year.

"This study shows that binge drinkers are. greatly increasing their chances of harming themselves and others", said Robert Brewer, M.D., M.S.P.H., lead researcher in CDC's alcohol program. Most binge drinkers were located in Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Hawaii.

The CDC news release also cited the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which suggested that healthcare providers could use alcohol screening and intervention as tools that could be used in dealing with binge drinking. "The findings also show the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to prevent binge drinking, focusing on reducing both the number of times people binge drink and the amount they drink when they binge".

The CDC warns of the dangers of binge drinking, including the increased likelihood of unsafe driving and risky sexual behavior.

Public health officials recommend that people who want to consume alcohol should do so in moderation.
