California Judge Rules Charles Manson's Remains Will Go To His Grandson

Judge decides grandson will get Charles Manson’s body

Jason L. Freeman, a purported grandson of Charles Manson, claimed in court papers that he was the notorious killer's true heir. Now, a court has ruled in favor of Manson's purported grandson Jason Freeman.

Since Manson died from colon cancer in November, his remains have been held on ice at the Kern County Coroner's office, and three men have been suing to get ownership over his body.

The three-way fight for the body included Freeman, a man who said he was fathered by Manson, and a pen pal who was friends with Manson and has filed what he said was the cult leader's will.

Knight cited problems with the will submitted by buddy Michael Channels because he was one of the two witnesses while also the sole beneficiary, which is suspect. It was also ambiguous about what would be done with Manson's body other than for Channels to use his judgment as executor. He said Channels had used his contacts with Manson to generate memorabilia to pay his mortgage while also denigrating the killer in conversations with others.

Freeman didn't immediately comment, but previously said he would cremate and spread the ashes of Manson and put to rest "this so-called monster, this historical figure that shouldn't have been blown up as big as it was for all these years". The murders were carried out by a cult group under his control known as the "Manson family".

"Freeman is hereby determined to be the surviving competent adult next of kin of the decedent".

Charles Manson is escorted to his arraignment in 1969 on conspiracy-murder charges in connection with the Sharon Tate murder case. Lentz claimed Manson fathered him in an orgy in Wisconsin, and that his rights were cemented in a will he reportedly signed in 2017. But because Lentz was adopted after he was born, he forfeited any relationship with his biological parents, Knight ruled. The next court hearing is March 16.

Freeman maintained Manson died without a will and that any such document anyone claims to possess is a forgery.

Manson was convicted ofseven counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder in the deaths of Tate, the La Biancas and four other people at the Tate residence - coffee heiress Abigail Ann Folger, photographer Wojciech Frykowski, hairdresser Jay Sebring and Steven Earl Parent, who was shot and killed in his vehicle on his way to visit an acquaintance who lived in a separate rented guest house on the Tate property.

Freeman now has been tasked with the responsibility of burying the body.

"My grandfather was really sick in the hospital and it was hard for me to handle seeing that I lived in Florida and he resided in California", said Freeman. Attorney Dale Kiken, who represents Freeman, told the AP his client wants to have a final internment that doesn't keep ashes or pieces of Manson.

"From a logical standpoint, there's a great benefit to a public scattering of his ashes, not just for finality for his relatives but to everyone affected by Mr. Manson", Kiken said, according to the wire service.
