Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin nets 600th career National Hockey League goal

Connor Hellebuyck gloves a shot on goal as Philadelphia Flyers' Andrew MacDonald left and Ben Chiarot skate past during the second period

Ovechkin pumped his fist after his 600th goal and received a standing ovation from his home crowd. Evgeny Kuznetsov scored the OT victor.

"Most great goal-scorers, when they're in their early 20s is when they're putting up all their big numbers", Capitals owner Ted Leonsis said.

Ovechkin scored twice in another historic performance and Evgeny Kuznetsov had the overtime victor as the Capitals returned to first place by beating the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 on Monday night.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, "Ovechkin is the sixth player in National Hockey League history to score 600 career goals with one franchise, joining Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman, Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic and Bobby Hull".

"Of course it's special", he said. As much as you're left kind of smiling when the puck goes in because it happens so often now and it's fun to watch, there have been an bad lot of games where he could have had two or three more. "I knew if I'm gonna have another one, I'm gonna score".

The significant factors in Ovechkin's goal-scoring prowess are his shot volume and where he takes them. He has roughly a fifth of Washington's goals this season and needed to be on his game against Patrik Laine and Winnipeg. Laine has scored 16 goals in his past 12 games. Nikolaj Ehlers also scored a 4-on-4 goal for Winnipeg, which got 40 saves from Connor Hellebuyck. "But 600 goals in under 1,000 games, it's pretty unreal", said Laine. "I think the way he looks at it, it's so hard to do and he had a down year (last season)". "But it's all a part of this process and he's not fazed by it".

Kitty Hawk reveals new Cora air taxi
Mr Johns says it is fitting that this part of the world hosts the trials of the electric self-piloting air taxi. A new all-electric autonomous aircraft built by the startup Kitty Hawk has been in testing for months.

"He's got a gift for scoring goals", Jets defenseman Ben Chiarot said. "You can just tell he's very, very determined and he is a historic player". Only Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Marcel Dionne have scored 40 in a season more times than Ovechkin.

His wife, Nastya, had flown back from Moscow just in time. "I was splitting these games one way or the other", said Maurice. "It's kind of nice when someone from your family is in the stands". Ovechkin is now within striking distance of Jari Kurri (601 goals), Dino Ciccarelli (608), Bobby Hull (610), and Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla (tied at 625) on the all-time list. No. 600 came 3 minutes, 53 seconds into the second period and marked his 42nd goal this season, which leads the National Hockey League. "I was in a good spot - just behind him. Hopefully he's getting it maybe the next game but not tonight", he said. Barry Trotz taking over as Capitals coach helped Ovechkin round out his overall game and avoid the kind of lull that goal-scorers typically hit when they turn 30.

"I feel like my legs were 15 years old", Kuznetsov said. I can't score 20 in a year.

Winnipeg is 3-1-0 through the first four games of this eastern swing and will go with the same lineup that fell 2-1 in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon. Ds Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey and Fs Alex Chiasson and Travis Boyd were healthy scratches for Washington.

The Jets (41-18-9) are comfortably in second place in the Central Division, seven points behind Nashville and six points ahead of Minnesota.
