Buhari Writes Senate, Rejects Amended Timetable For 2019 Elections

Earlier in February, the Joint Committees of the National Assembly agreed on some of the amendments to the Electoral Act.

President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to the amended 2018 Electoral Act forwarded to him by the National Assembly.

The federal lawmakers want their election to come up first, followed by that of state lawmakers and governors, and lastly the presidential election.

The amendment had passed in both the Senate and the House and its now awaiting Buhari's assent.

The amendment placed Presidential election last in the sequence of elections.

Buhari made this knwon in a letter read by Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker, House of Representatives, on Tuesday at Tuesday's plenary.

"The amendment to section 152 (325) of the Principal Act may raise constitutional issues over the competence of the National Assembly to legislate over Local Government elections". As a party, we are not afraid of the 2019 general elections because we know that Nigerians have already rejected President Buhari and his dysfunctional All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Presidential letter entitled "PRESIDENTIAL DECISION TO WITHHOLD ASSENT TO THE ELECTORAL AMENDMENT BILL 2018", was read by Saraki on the floor of the upper chamber yesterday.

"Please accept Mr Senate President the assurances of my highest consideration", the president stated.

It is not yet clear the next line of action of the lawmakers.
