49ers linked to top free agent offensive lineman Andrew Norwell

Ross Cockrell New York Giants

On Monday, Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com reported hearing that the San Francisco 49ers were "linked to" the top free agent guard about to hit free agency, Andrew Norwell.

Norwell, 26, went undrafted out of Ohio State in 2014 but last season earned First Team All-Pro honors for the Panthers while playing under offensive line coach Ray Brown, who is now with the Cardinals in the same position.

But the Jaguars turned up as the surprise suitors for Norwell, signing the consistent left guard to a five-year deal worth up to $66.5 million, according to reports. However, in the end, the Bears have ultimately turned to the free agent market - which means not giving up running back Jordan Howard - in order to help soon-to-be second-year quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.

A potentially far more cost-effective offensive line option, Hubbard earned a 69.6 Pro Football Focus grade ("below average") previous year. The deal includes $30 million in fully guaranteed money. Robinson notably appeared in less than one game for the Jaguars this past season after tearing his ACL in Week 1 against the rival Houston Texans. In 2016, Norwell allowed just two sacks for the season.

The 49ers might also consider offensive line upgrades in the National Football League draft.
