Texas superintendent threatens to suspend students who protest gun violence

With events planned encouraging students, teachers, parents and administrators to walk out in protest of gun violence in schools, one Houston-area school district says students will not be allowed to participate on its campuses.

Students across the country are joining the survivors of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in demanding that lawmakers take action to prevent mass shootings, but one Texas school district is warning students that participating in protests will result in suspension.

A school district abruptly removed its Facebook page less than 24 hours after the superintendent released a statement threatening to suspend students who walk out to protest gun laws. "Life is all about choices and every choice has a outcome whether it be positive or negative".

The junior high is in Rhode's school district, according to the district's website.

Walkouts have been reported in various states, including Florida, Colorado, Minnesota and IL, where some school administrators said they were instructed to allow students to walk out peacefully, while others, like those in the eastern Texas city of Needville, said they had a zero tolerance policy toward such demonstrations. "We will discipline no matter if it is one, fifty, or five hundred students involved".

As seen in a graphic shared by an account for the Student Walkout Against Gun Violence, the protest was planned for Tuesday, Feb. 21, at noon. Screenshots of the letter were shared via social media.

The statement, and the school's Facebook page, were taken down Wednesday afternoon, after it received local and national media attention. TIME reached out to Superintendent Rhodes and will update this post once we've heard back.

"It's a quintessential First Amendment violation, and most Americans have an instinct about that", Georgetown law professor Heidi Li Feldman told The Washington Post. "So this looks like a total problem".
