USA gymnasts open up on abuse

Nassar pleaded guilty in November to sexually assaulting seven girls, but Judge Aquilina is allowing many more victims to speak in court. That would add to a 60-year sentence he is serving in federal prison on child pornography convictions.

The 54-year-old Nassar pleaded guilty to 10 counts, but prosecutors and civil attorneys have said there are more than 100 victims.

Just yesterday, NBC News reported that Larry complained to the Judge in a six-page letter, accusing her of turning his sentencing into a "media circus" and claiming she's only giving more than 100 of his accusers a chance to speak "so the media cameras will be directed at her".

"Judges are human beings, too", said Victoria Vuletich, who teaches ethics at WMU-Cooley Law School.

With about 120 victims now expected to make statements at the hearing, more than initially expected, Nassar's sentencing has been delayed to early next week.

Wieber had not stepped forward as one of Nassar's victims until this week, and she joins a handful of other well-known gymnasts in speaking out about Nassar's abuse.

Wieber is retired from competitive gymnastics and now coaches the team at UCLA, where one of her athletes is fellow Fierce Five member Kyla Ross. And it's still dealing with the fallout from, you know, Larry Nassar's abuse. "We are here, we have our voices, and we are not going anywhere".

"You are a thief, Larry Nassar", she said.

She also blamed Michigan State University, USA Gymnastics and the United States Olympic Committee for his continued work with athletes.

Jamie Dantzscher, a 2000 Olympic gymnast, also spoke on Thursday and addressed Nassar directly.

Klages was the women's gymnastics coach for 27 seasons and retired in February.

McKayla Maroney, 22, retired from competitive gymnastics in 2016. In her statement, the gold medalist said the former team doctor took advantage of the fact that treatments with him "were mandatory". Known as an incredibly strong vaulter, Maroney also took home the gold medal on vault at the 2013 World Championship, where she became the first USA female gymnast to defend a World Championships vault title.

'I thought that training for the Olympics would be the hardest thing I would ever had to do, ' said Wieber. "I hope this review will help the survivors and the entire MSU community heal and move forward", she said in a statement.

By the time Denhollander was sent to Nassar for treatment, four different women had raised concerns about him. As the Board said, "We are making this request because we believe such a review is needed to answer questions that persist concerning MSU's handling of the Nassar situation". She grew up in the Lansing area and says she started seeing Nassar at age 8.

"And please, your honor, stress the need to investigate how this happened so that we can hold accountable those who empowered and enabled Larry Nassar", she concluded.

In a joint statement, the Senate leaders said, "In light of recent news, it is clear that the Michigan State University Board of Trustees should act swiftly to remove President Simon from her position at MSU".

Denhollander says Klages called in the other gymnasts, and questioned them in front of Boyce. Her parents were friends with Nassar.
