Trump to approve 'significantly flawed' Iran nuclear deal for last time

800x800.jpg

The foreign ministry noted in an earlier note Saturday on its website that the agreement is "not a bilateral agreement that can be annulled by unilateral action".

A decision to withhold a waiver would have effectively ended the deal between Iran and the other worldwide signatories.

Issuing designations for 14 individuals and entities, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the USA will not be a silent spectator while the Iranian regime continues to engage in human rights abuses and injustice.

Trump outlined four "critical components" that must be included in USA legislation regarding Iran. (Incomprehensibly, the deal allowed them to do this.) Beyond that, the Iranians are buddies with the North Koreans. Those mainly targeted Iranian defense officials, as well as a China-based network the USA says is supporting Iran's missile program.

What are the new sanctions?

While Trump did not levy nuclear sanctions on the regime, the administration is hitting Iran with several other sanctions for its ballistic missile activity and violent crackdown on anti-government protesters in recent weeks. Among its other stipulations, the law targeted foreign banks that conducted transactions with Iran's central bank.

Foreign financial institutions or individuals could also face sanctions for doing business with those blacklisted, the US Treasury added.

A key element of Trump's plan is that sanctions will be reimposed - or "snap back" - automatically if Congress finds Iran to be violating the terms of the accord.

How else did Iran react?

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the USA of making a "desperate attempt" to undermine a "solid" deal. These areas fall outside the scope of the nuclear deal. As it stands, Iran is now allowed to enrich uranium to low grades unsuitable for weapons use.

According to him, any actions by any participants in the worldwide community, which Washington does not enjoy, results in the US sanctions.

The remarks by Behrouz Nemati came one day after Donald Trump declared his new Iran strategy.

China's trade with N. Korea plunges due to United Nations sanctions
Security Council imposed a series of sanctions restricting oil imports and cutting off about 90 percent of its export revenue. After North Korea tested its most powerful nuclear device yet and launched missiles capable of reaching the U.S., the U.N.

The ministry added that, "The internal solidity of and worldwide support for the agreement have blocked attempts by Mr. Trump, the Zionist regime and the ominous alliance of hard-line warmongers to terminate this agreement or make changes to it".

During his presidential election campaign, and in the year since he took office, Trump repeatedly castigated the nuclear agreement as "a very bad deal", and threatened to scrap it.

"This is a last chance", Trump vowed Friday in a statement announcing that he'd waived economic sanctions tied to the 2015 accord a final time.

"If other nations fail to act during this time, I will terminate our deal with Iran", Trump said.

He told the global community, in particular his European allies, either to fix the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) or he would withdraw the U.S. from the nuclear deal. Work already has begun on this front, the official said.

The president also wants the US Congress to amend a law on US participation in the nuclear deal, so that Washington can reimpose all sanctions if Iran breaches certain "trigger points".

Robert Malley, who worked on the National Security Council under former President Barack Obama, said, "In a nutshell, he's saying, 'Kill the deal with me, or we'll kill it alone'".

"A wide range of countries have become targets of the USA sanctions", Ryabkov said.

Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, described Mr Trump's comments as "extremely negative".

One official said Trump would be open to remaining in a modified deal if it were made permanent.

They've been lobbying hard to keep the Trump administration in, arguing that the deal is working.
