Synaptics in-display fingerprint reader enters mass production for 'top 5 OEM'

We recently saw that Synaptics announced the world's first in-display fingerprint scanner dubbed Clear ID. In addition, the read fingerprint sensor will be located below the rear camera for easier access.

Also of note is that Synaptics is offering press and analysts the opportunity to get a live demo if this in-display fingerprint sensor on a "full-production, soon to be announced Tier 1 customer phone".

It's not clear who the smartphone manufacturer set to incorporate Clear ID is, or when the smartphone that incorporates it will ship to the masses. Of course, we can rule Apple out of speculation. The fact that Synaptics says that its in-display fingerprint sensor is designed for smartphones with infinity displays hints that it could be a Samsung device because Samsung calls the displays on its flagship Galaxy smartphones "Infinity Displays". Now, Synaptics has revealed its own fingerprint sensor that can reside under a display.

The rise of infinity displays makes it tough for OEMs to place the fingerprint sensor anywhere but under the screen.

Synaptics Clear ID In-display fingerprint technology allows users to securely unlock the device in situations including while it's sitting on the table, at any angle, or while in a auto mount.

Looks like the time has finally come where we will be seeing phones with under screen fingerprints sensors as Synaptics has plans to mass produce an optical in-display fingerprint sensor and they added that a very big partner backing them.

Synaptics Clear ID also boasts SecureLink which combines support for TLS (Transport Layer Security) protocol with ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem) authentication and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) symmetric algorithm.

More secure biometric authentication - like fingerprint sensing, iris scanning and facial recognition - is always a good thing, but the update may seem especially necessary after hackers were able to fool the iris scanner on the Galaxy S8 using a photo and contact lenses.
