Jihadi linked to Manchester Arena bomber found guilty of being ISIS member

A member of the same Manchester jihadi network as bomber Salman Abedi faces years in jail after being convicted of joining Isis in Syria.

Mohammed Abdallah, 26, from Manchester, travelled to Syria with three friends in July 2014.

After an Old Bailey trial, Abdallah, of Manchester, was found guilty of possessing an AK47 assault rifle, receiving £2,000 for terrorism and of being a member of IS.

Mrs Justice McGowan adjourned sentence until Friday.

Abdalraouf played a key role in helping his older brother travel to Syria with fellow Manchester fanatics, Raymond Matimba, 28, and Stephen Gray, 34.

Abdallah, of Westerling Way in Moss Side, had arrived in Britain as a refugee at the age of three after his family fled the Gaddafi regime in Libya, gaining dual British nationality.

Abdallah travelled to Syria on 3 July 2014 where along with others he joined an unknown militia.

The fanatic came to the United Kingdom for NHS treatment for his wheelchair-bound terror guru brother after he was left paralysed when he was shot during the 2011 Libyan uprising.

Abdallah went to Burnage High School in Manchester and also attended Didsbury Mosque, where Manchester Arena suicide bomber Salman Abedi was also known to have worshipped, it can now be reported.

Talking to media on the occasion, he said Pakistani-British men and women had made great contributions in making London the greatest city in the world.

Jurors were shown video footage of both siblings handling heavy Russian-made machine guns on vehicles in Libya. Abdallah admitted to having previously fought for an Islamist group against the Gaddafi regime in Libya.

In court, Abdallah denied swearing allegiance to the extremist organisation, saying he refused and was sent to prison as a result, adding that he was also "threatened with being beheaded" and "was shot at. I was hit. I had bruises and a black eye".

Sue Hemming, head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) counter-terror division, said conversations on messaging apps proved that Abdallah's reasons for being in Syria were not innocent.

Abdalraouf Abdallah and Gray were arrested in Manchester in November 2014.

The court heard Abdalraouf was "a man wholly committed to terrorist purposes" who masterminded his brother's journey to Syria, alongside Gray, Khalifa and Matimba, in July 2014.

In 2016, Abdalraouf Abdallah was found guilty of assisting others in committing acts of terrorism, and terror funding and jailed for five-and-a-half years.

In May 2016 Abdalraouf was jailed for five-and-a-half years for terrorism offences - only four months before Mohammed returned to the United Kingdom from Syria and was arrested.

Fellow Mancunian Hostey, described as an "inspirational figure" for would-be jihadis, left the United Kingdom in 2013 and is believed to have been killed in a drone strike in 2016.

And in January and March this year - weeks before the Manchester bombing - Abedi visited his close friend Abdalraouf in Liverpool's privately-run Altcourse prison without anyone flagging the trips.
