Remembering Shashi Kapoor: Pak fans gather outside his ancestral haveli

Earlier, Pakistani music artists Shafqat Amanat Ali and Salman Ahmad on Monday condoled the sudden demise of veteran actor-filmmaker Shashi Kapoor, remembering how he believed in peace and harmony among neighbours.

The romantic screen icon of the 70s and 80s was given a state funeral, held amid massive security around 12 noon.

The actor shared a black and white throwback picture of a young Shashi Kapoor sitting with legendary actor Raj Kapoor. Kapoors lived at a haveli there before he moved to Mumbai and gave us four generations of talented actors.

"Shashi Kapoor expired at 5.20 pm on December 4 at Kokilaben Hospital, here", Dr Ram Narain, executive director of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, told news agency IANS in a message.

Kapoor, who started his career as a child actor in his father Prithviraj Kapoor's plays, was well-known for his roles in films like "Deewaar" (1975), "Satyam Shivam Sundaram" (1978), "Junoon" (1978), "Shaan" (1980), and "Namak Halaal" (1982). The veteran actor was 79 years-old and had been suffering from chest infection.

But neither of the men shown were Kapoor - one was his nephew Rishi and the other was actor Amitabh Bachchan. Shashi won a National Film Award for Best Actor in 1986 for the film "New Delhi Times" and even the Special Jury award in 1994 for the film "In Custody". He was also awarded the third highest civilian honour - Padmabhushan - by the government in 2011.
